Bloor Derby Hand Painted Ecuelle Joseph Bancroft 1813
Stunningly beautiful early Bloor Derby Ecuelle and stand painted by the then very young Joseph Bancroft. Dating to 1813-15.

Joseph Bancroft was born in Derby on 23/3/1797. He apprenticed as a flower and shell painter at the Derby China Factory at around 1806 at the age of 9, and would have finished his time by 1813, making him around 16 years old. In 1815 he left Derby and went on to become Mintons' leading painter until his death in 1857. Needless to say, there is little of his work around and it is rare to see on the market.

Both pieces are painted with pairs of oval panels of seashells divided by elaborate gilt foliage.
The bowl has entwined gilded handles.

General condition is excellent.
Gilding is a little worn on the handles and rims commensurate with age.

Marked to the base of the bowl with a very faded early bloor crown and crossed baton with a D below.

Bowl: 2 1/2" tall x 5 1/2" in diam.
6.5cm x 14cm.

Stand: 7 1/4" in diam. 18.5cm.
